According to the complaint filed with Ambad police station by talathi Arun Patil, 47, he and his team were on duty at Lahavit to check for sand trafficking on the Nashik-Mumbai highway at the entry point to that city. When they spotted a sand truck with its number plate smeared with black paint, they got suspicious. The team believed the truck was overloaded and being transported illegally. They stopped it, only to find the driver unwilling to show any documents or share information.
The officials decided to take the vehicle to the tehsildar's office for investigation. Patil sat with the driver to direct it, while other team members stayed at the spot.
As the truck moved toward Nashik, the driver called someone up to say the truck had been caught. At this juncture. Patil took away his cell phone. But a short distance ahead, a car stood in the middle of the road, blocking their path. Two men emerged from the car and, along with the driver, started shouting cruses at Patil. The goons got up on the truck and beat him up. They then asked the driver to start the truck, and tossed Patil out before speeding away.
Patil called up his teammates, who took him to hospital. After treatment, he filed a complaint against the truck driver and the others for attempting to kill him. He also said that the truck escaped with sand worth, according to him, approximately Rs56,000.
Patil has sustained injuries to his hand and leg, and the case is under investigation by Ambad police.
