Even as government schemes like Make in India, targeted at big businesses that have hogged all the limelight in recent times, its the poor that would be the centre of attention for prime minister Narendra Modi in the coming days.
The Jan Dhan Yojana that helped the Modi sarkar open 15 crore bank accounts for the poor in record time is just the foundation. The government in coming days would continue to build the base in coming days, said Modi.
"Even as we are making a major impact across the world with our Make in India campaign to achieve new heights of growth, on the other hand we are working hard to ensure that the poorest of poor have bank accounts. Jan Dhan was just a foundation, on it we are continuing to add more schemes for the poor," the prime minister said.
A beginning was made on Saturday with Modi launching three social security schemes for the poor providing insurance and pension benefits.
These schemes, under the nomenclature Jan Suraksha Yojna, are Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Yojana, and Atal Pension Yojana" under the Jan Suraksha Yojna.
The schemes have already been launched on a pilot basis achieving 5.05 crore enrollment since May 1.
Jan Dhan, Modi said, turned into a sort of revolution touching 15 crore people helping to bring 95% of people under the banking sector in 100 days.
"In these 15 crore accounts, about Rs 15,800 crore has been deposited so far. This shows they don't need help (sahara), they need strength. They need all the strength to free themselves of poverty," Modi said in a finance-ministry organised event at a Kolkata auditorium where chief minister Mamata Banerjee was present.
The schemes provide a Rs 2-crore insurance cover against Rs 12 contribution a year, or Re 1 a month, a calculation that has now been turned into a smart marketing campaign for this initiative.
"I am pleading to the people to contribute this Rs 12 for the security of their domestic helps, drivers, security guards, people who have become part of their families," Modi told the audience in Kolkata as well as in 115 other locations where the event was beamed live.
"Even natural calamity is covered. Imagine the kind of help the survivors in Nepal would have received if such a scheme was available!," he added.
Besides poverty, the government is fighting a big battle against corruption, Modi said. "Cooking gas cylinder subsidy is now reaching to the accounts of more them 12 crore people. "You can't imagine we could stop leakages of thousands of crores."
After the event Modi then went on to meet ailing Swami Atmasthananda, Ramakrishna Mission's ailing president in a hospital.
The 97-year-old Swami Atmasthananda, who is undergoing treatment for age-related complications, had turned down a young Modi thrice when he wanted to become a monk of the order founded by Ramakrishna Paramhamsa, Swami Vivekananda's guru.
The Prime Minister also met state chief minister again at the governor's house.
On Sunday morning, Modi would visit Dakshineswar Temple and Belur Math where the Ramakrishna Math is located after which he would fly off to Burnpur, where he would inaugurate the modernised Indian Iron & Steel Company belonging to SAIL.
