In a startling revelation in the Laila Khan murder case, the Mumbai Police told a court here that Nadir Shah Patel is not the real father of the Bollywood starlet, who was murdered along with five of her family members in 2011.

This came in response to Patel's application in the sessions court here last month in which he had sought handing over of all six bodies, currently in police custody, for cremation. Earlier, he had refused to take custody of their skeletal remains, claiming that the city police had botched up the investigation in the case.

The crime branch filed a DNA report yesterday stating that the bodies could not be handed over to Patel as he was not the biological father of Laila and her siblings.

"We have filed a report saying that Patel was not the biological father of Laila and her siblings," Special Public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said.

Mumbai Police crime branch had arrested Parvez Tak, Laila's stepfather in connection with the murder in 2011.

According to the charge sheet filed on October 3, 2012 Tak killed Laila and her family members for monetary gains and as they refused to share their earnings with him.

"In 2010, Laila's sisters --Azmina, Zara and Reshma -- had gone to work in Dubai with one (Asif) Sheikh who was known to Tak," the chargesheet had said.

"When they returned, they refused to share their earnings. Tak had this grudge against them and he conspired to kill them to usurp their property," it said.

Earlier, the crime branch had said that Laila's mother Shelina was married to Asif Sheikh (her first two husbands were Nadir Patel and Tak) but she told Tak that Asif was her brother but Tak always suspected that the duo had an affair.

The crime branch had also said that Tak did not like that Asif was still maintaining contact with the family and "the family's decision to relocate to Dubai also made him feel abandoned as he did not have a passport".

Tak is accused of killing Laila (30), her mother Shelina (51), her elder sister Azmina (32), twin siblings Zara and Imran (25) and cousin Reshma.

The family had gone missing in February 2011 from Mumbai. Later, a case of kidnapping was registered at the Oshiwara police station here on July 3 on a complaint by her father Nadir Patel.

On the night of February 7, 2011, Tak had a heated argument with Shelina at the family's farmhouse in Igatpuri near Nashik after which he allegedly hit her with a blunt object, causing her death, police had said.

As other family members came to her rescue, Tak called Shakir Hussain Wani, whom he had appointed as a watchman two months before the incident, and the two allegedly killed them following a scuffle, they had said.
