Mumbai: SoBo minor stalked and molested in broad daylight, one arrested

A 19-year-old pavement dweller was arrested by the police for stalking and molesting a the ninth standard school girl.

In a shocking incident, a 14-year-old South Mumbai resident was molested for over 10 days in broad day light.

The Azad Maidan police has arrested a 19-year-old, a pavement dweller, for stalking and molesting a the ninth standard school girl. The victim complained to her parents when on Tuesday afternoon the accused held her hand and showed her a knife.

According to the Azad Maidan police, the victim would get off at the same bus stop everyday and would walk to her house. However, since March 11 a group of four goons would eve tease her everyday, blow flying kisses and pass vulgar comments.

Initially, she ignored it thinking that it would stop and that if she complained to her parents they would blame her for doing something wrong."However, on Tuesday, the accused and one other held her hand and showed her a knife. She freed herself and ran back to her parents. When she and her parents reached the spot they found the main accused while the other one had run away from the spot. Onlookers beat up the accused while her parents called the police control room," the officer added.

The accused was produced in the Esplande court and remanded to police custody till March 24. A police officer said, "During interrogation, the accused revealed that he hails from Uttar Pradesh and is a waiter. However, he is not accepting that he has committed the crime, instead, he claims he has come to Mumbai only a couple of days ago."

The police is on the look out of his three other friends, searching for CCTV cameras in the area and collecting evidences against the accused.

On the basis of the victim's statement, we have registered a complaint under sections 354 (A) (sexual harassment) and (D) (stalking), 506 (2) (Punishment for criminal intimidation), 34 ( Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) and relevant sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). In 2016, the cases registered under section 354 (D) were 488 while cases under 354 (A) were 1172.
