After a gap of 12 years, Bhayander resident Nisha Gupta (30) has taken admissions in class 12. An accident in 2004 had left her paralysed from waist down and forced her to leave her education incomplete. Now, she has taken admission in the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) in the arts stream.
Gupta's life changed after she had an accident during her visit to her grandmother's house in Uttar Pradesh (UP). Here, while playing with her friends she fell off a nine-foot wall hitting her spine on a steep rock. "Doctors in Mumbai informed my parents that I will have no sensation or movements below my waist ever. I was taken to the All India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AIIPMR)," she added.
"The turning point of my life was when I went to a seminar for paraplegics with my brother. I saw many people like me doing so many activities. I spoke about it to my parents and they agreed to support me in whatever I wanted to do," said Gupta. She tried data entry jobs, learnt tattoo designing and post her marriage in 2013, she started swimming as a form of exercise.
"I used to practise at the District Sports Complex, Dharavi for three hours a day. Here, I got to know about the National Paralympic Swimming Championship. I trained myself for it and won the third prize in November 2015," she said. After becoming a national level sportsperson, Gupta felt a need to continue her education and complete the only aspect in her life which remained incomplete due to the accident.
"I am confident that I would complete what I am taking up. Education is important for everyone. I want to participate in some more swimming competitions but I also feel I should have a basic degree at least. I will be doing Bachelor of Arts after my HSC boards."
