Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, in an administrative review meeting at Siliguri gave a dressing down to MLAs and government officers of three districts — Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling.

Taking stock of the progress of various welfare schemes at the three districts, Mamata was visibly perturbed and gave stern warnings to officials to pull up their socks and expedite the works at a faster pace.

She was particularly miffed at the poor implementation of Kanyashree, Mamata's pet project which has been lauded recently by the United Nations and also the slow progress of 100 days' work scheme. She directed the district magistrates of the districts to submit a report at the CMO stating the exact position of implementation of the projects at the respective districts. "If there is someone who has come for work under the 100-days' work scheme, he should not be refused," she said. She also criticised the chief medical officer of health (CMOH) of Jalpaiguri for issuing showcause notice to 20 doctors. "We have to see to it that those doctors are able to perform their duties well," she added.

Referring to the irregularities of in the figure of deaths by elephant attacks, she said, "The exact number of families affected need to be identified so that they can be compensated."

She also advised administrative officials against making false promises. "It is not my nature to make false promises. Only after required funds are made available, new projects would be taken up. Till then, there should not be any promises about those projects," she said.

Talking about the arrest of the two suspected Al-Qaeda linkmen on Tuesday by Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police, she said that there was a need for better security at the border. She also advised that district administration should draw up a feasibility study for putting up additional watch towers at border areas.
