Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan received a partial relief from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to recover part of pending arrears from the state power distribution company (MahaVitaran) for the sale of wind power from two plants.

Aishwarya had approached MERC to direct MahaVitaran to pay dues worth Rs 3.96 crore for power supplied from two wind plants: One each in Dhule and Nashik districts.

MERC upheld separate petitions filed by Aishwarya and four other aggrieved wind generating companies seeking early payment of dues from MahaVitaran as per the provisions of the Wind Energy Purchase Agreement (WEPA). She also claimed that MahaVitaran be directed to pay the carrying cost at the rate of 15 per cent per annum for delayed payment.

A MahaVitaran officer told DNA, “Following MERC’s order issued on January 4, it has so far paid Rs 2.69 crore to Bachchan. MahaVitaran still owes her Rs 3.73 crore to be paid for wind energy generation up till October last year. It has submitted a time-table regarding the payment of pending dues to Aishwarya and other power generators.”

Of the total outstanding amount of Rs 2,235.03 crore, the MahaVitaran has paid Rs 300 crore to wind energy generators, the officer said. Of outstanding dues worth Rs 1,591 crore, MahaVitaran had paid Rs 1,141.86 crore, while the balance amount of Rs 577.65 crore would be released by March this year.

MERC, in its order, insisted that MahaVitaran and the petitioners would have to adhere to WEPA provisions in a fair and transparent manner. It also urged the utility to sit together with wind generators and reconcile the statement of account within two weeks from January 4.

MahaVitaran would have to pay interest of 1.25 per cent per month on any late payment surcharge and delayed payment charge if it deviates from its commitment give in the outstanding payment plan.
