Madras HC directs Tamil Nadu govt to destroy illegal Chinese crackers

The state government has to report to the Madras High Court on October 26 about the squads formed for this purpose.

The Madras High Court in response to a petition has asked the Tamil Nadu government to form special teams to seize and destroy all Chinese firecrackers. A report in Deccan Chronicle says that the CBI has been investigating the import and sale of Chinese crackers which is illegal.

M Shaik Abdulahhad, executive secretary of the Metro Fireworks Dealers Association, had filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court against Chinese crackers. He stated that shops in Chennai had been selling Sivakasi crackers for more than a decade and they were now affected by cracker imported from China.

The report adds that that the Madurai bench had already directed the central and state governments to prevent illegal import of Chinese crackers. The import from China was destroying the local cottage industries it opined.
