Kolkata: Two Bangladeshi nationals killed in road accident

In the wee hours of Friday night, a Jaguar car coming from the West on Shakespeare Sarani hit a Mercedes Car coming from Loudon Street. Consequently, the Mercedes car toppled over and dashed into the Kolkata Police’s signal controlling kiosk, running over three pedestrians who were taking cover in the heavy rains.

Two Bangladeshi nationals were killed in a road accident in Kolkata on late Friday night. 

According to reports, a Jaguar car coming from the West on Shakespeare Sarani hit a Mercedes Car coming from Loudon Street on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. Consequently, the Mercedes car toppled over and dashed into the Kolkata Police’s signal controlling kiosk, running over three pedestrians who were taking cover in the heavy rains. 

Of these three pedestrians, two were Bangladeshi nationals. They were soon taken to SSKM Hospital where they were declared brought dead.

While the driver and a passenger of the Mercedes also received injuries, the driver of the Jaguar fled after the accident who was later arrested by Kolkata Police. He was identified as 22-year-old Arsalan Parvez

One of the two deceased has been identified as Kazi MD Mainul Alam, a 36-year-old resident of Bangladesh. Alam works with Bangladesh’s nationalised telecom service - Grameen Phones. Another deceased has been identified as Tania, aged 28 years. Tania works as an assistant bank manager with City Bank, Dhaka. 

According to information shared by the Bangladeshi Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, the duo had come to Kolkata on August 14 for treatment.

“The commission is now coordinating with Ministry of External Affairs and Bengal Government to arrange for their dead bodies to be sent back home in Dhaka,” said Md. Bashiruddin, Consular, Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata. 

“A case has been recorded vide Sec K2 case no 159 dt. 17.08.19 u/s279/427/304 (part-ii) against the driver of Jaguar. The driver has been arrested, will be produced before the court. FSTP has taken over the investigation,” a statement from Kolkata Police stated.
