After five days of mammoth search and rescue operation, the Indian army has pulled off the body of one of the five missing soldiers from the tonnes of snow along the Line of Control (LoC) in Naugam sector.

Sepoy Kaushal Singh of 20 Dogra regiment was among the two soldiers who were buried under the mounds of snow after they slipped down the high altitude area of the Naugam sector along the LoC on Tuesday. After hectic efforts, the specialized rescue team recovered his body from the snow.

“We have recovered the body of Sepoy Kaushal Singh. Four other soldiers continue to remain missing. The search and rescue operation is on”, said Colonel Rajesh Kalia, defence spokesman at Srinagar.

Massive snow avalanches had swept away army bunkers at two different places on Tuesday. The first incident had occurred at Kanzalwan sub-sector of Gurez in the LoC when a snow avalanche swept away a high altitude `Mani Post' in Bagtoor area.

Three army jawans, who were manning the post were swept away by the avalanche and continue to remain untraceable. The second incident occurred in Naugam sector along the LoC when two soldiers slipped down from the high altitude area.

For the last five days, army rescuers are busy in mammoth search and rescue operations to locate five missing soldiers in the huge mounds of snow in Gurez and Naugam sectors along the Line of Control (LoC) in North Kashmir.

Inclement weather and poor visibility in high altitude areas is also hampering the search and rescue operations. Upper reaches and high altitude areas have been receiving heavy snowfall in the last five days.

Indian army has pressed Specialized Avalanche Rescue Teams (ARTs) into service and moved special equipment to the site to trace out the missing soldiers.  Specially trained sniffer dogs too have been brought in to help the soldiers in the search and rescue operations.  Tones of snow has accumulated at both the places and army rescuers are digging deep to locate the missing soldiers.

The fresh tragedy has come 11 months after the army lost 20 soldiers in the snow avalanches in Gurez, Sonamarg and Machil areas in the north and central Kashmir.
