Internet restored in Kashmir as normalcy returns

Life returned to normalcy in the valley on Sunday prompting the authorities to restore the mobile and broadband internet services across the restive Kashmir.

Baring Tral and Shopian townships, shops and business establishments reopened and transport hit the roads again on Sunday. The Kashmir valley was under perpetual lockdown with separatist calling for the hartal and marches to mark the first death anniversary of the Hizbul Mujahideen poster-boy Burhan Wani. Wani, along with his two aides, was killed by the security forces in the encounter at Bamdoora village in Anantnag district of south Kashmir on July 8, 2016.

Wani's home town of Tral and apple rich township of Shopian observed a shutdown for the second day on Sunday. All shops and business establishments were closed and vehicles kept off the roads.

Internet services were restored after security review meeting on Sunday. The services were snapped by the government after fears of rumour mongering and misusing of social media by the miscreants to mobilise mobs to mark the death anniversary of Wani.

"Mobile and broadband services have been restored in most parts of the valley after improvement in the situation," said an official.

A CRPF jawan was injured when terrorists lobbed a grenade on their camp at Tral on late Saturday night. Police sources said unidentified ultras fired grenade from under barrel grenade launcher (UBGL) at the CRPF camp at Aribal Tral at 10.30 pm on Saturday. The grenade exploded with a big bang injuring a constable. He was immediately shifted to hospital where his condition is stated to be critical.

Meanwhile, Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has invited Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Geelani for attending the proceedings of 44th session of the Council of Foreign ministers (CFM) to be held in Abidjan of Court Di, Ivoire on July 10 and 11.

However, Geelani has written to the OIC Secretary general that he would not be attending the meet because of the alleged curbs on his movement and non-availability of travel documents.
