The RTI activist and the whistle-blower of Mumbai’s famous Adarsh housing society scam, Simpreet Singh here on Saturday said that rather than seeking expertise of outside consultants, the residents of Indore should sit together to make BRTS Corridor a successful and practical venture.

“The Indore residents should realise that the BRTS Corridor belongs to them and they own the project,” Singh advised.

Commenting on growth pattern in Indore and other cities, the activist claimed that authorities are widening roads for addressing traffic problems in the name of urban planning.

“Several roads in Mumbai also are as large as a football ground but it only leads to chaos amid presence of vehicles in huge numbers,” he pointed, adding that development of public transport seems more plausible option which is successfully implemented overseas.

Singh referred to the example of Bhubaneshwar where the civic body has trifurcated roads, assigning a section each to the pedestrians, vehicles and street vendors.

Singh was in the city to address a seminar on ‘Roads and Livelihood Options’. “The growing crimes against women could be checked if the portions of abandoned roads are assigned for livelihood activities,” he opined.

Recounting his prolonged struggle for exposing Adarsh housing society scam through rigorous RTI campaign, Singh claimed that Adarsh was just an example and there are close to 50,000 buildings in Mumbai which have been built in violation of construction norms.

Same is the case in other cities of the country as well, he added.  The breach of building bylaws is rampant everywhere in the country, he claimed.

“The deplorable situation does not solicit blame game as it’s the responsibility of one and all to improve the system as corruption in deeply rooted in the system,” Singh said. He added that one of the CBI officers involved in Adarsh inquiry had a flat allotted to his name in another housing society.
