Police on Thursday registered a case against 1,000 BJP demonstrators, who had taken out a protest march in the city against the state government.

District Superintendent of Police, Jeetendra Shrivastava said the workers were booked for violating section 144, damaging public property and creating obstruction in government work.

Since the case was registered against 1,000 persons and not an individual, arrests would be made after identification, he added.

BJP city unit president Surendra Maithani said the police was acting on the directions of the state government.

He further said that they had given written information to the District Magistrate, Kanpur, about the rally three days ago and threatened that the party would launch a 'jail bharo andolan' if even a single worker was arrested.

BJP leaders and workers had taken out a rally on Wednesday from Naveen Market in protest against state government's failure to curb rising crime rate and power tariff hike, but were stopped by police before they could reach Bada Chauraha, one of the most busiest crossings in the city.
