DPS students' joyride crushes four, one dead

An early morning joyride by three Class XII students from DPS RK Puram turned tragic as their car ran over four victims sleeping on a pavement, killing one and injuring three others critically in north Delhi's Kashmere Gate area.

When questioned by the police, the trio said that after an all-night combined study session for their last exam, they decided to drive up to their school to click memories of their school life.

The accident occurred around 6.10 am, when Samarth Chugh, Ujjwal Goyal and Bhavya Rajpal, all classmates, were heading from the Model Town area to RK Puram in a Hyundai i20, owned by Ujjwal's father. Police officers said that Samarth was in the driving seat.

Witnesses told police that the car sped ahead of the Rajghat area on National Highway 44, and took a right turn from under the Old Railway Bridge. They said that Samarth could not see the men sleeping on the pavement and ran over four of them.

"One man, Asif, and another were dragged for a few metres from the pavement to the road, leaving both of them gruesomely defaced. The man who is still unidentified died on the spot. Two others, Sanjay and Karan, who were also sleeping on the pavement, were severely injured," said a senior police officer.

Police said that Chugh, who has been booked for the offence, told them that the there was a puncture and Chugh lost control of the vehicle.

As the vehicle came to a halt, people rushed to the spot. Asif and the deceased were dragged out from under the vehicle. Police officers say that the other person's body was crushed badly and he died on the spot.

Asif suffered multiple fractures, got his jaw twisted and abdomen crushed. He is critical and has undergone an operation at the nearby Sushrut Trauma Centre. Karan was discharged after treatment, while Sanjay sustained multiple fractures in his left leg.

The accused were apprehended and have been taken for a medical examination and their families were informed. Jatin Narwal, DCP North, said that investigations revealed that the car was owned by Ujjwal's father.

"A case under IPC Sections 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way) and 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and Section 181 of the Motor Vehicles Act for driving without a licence has been registered against Chugh. He was produced in a court, which sent him to judicial custody," said Narwal.

Since the car is owned by Ujjwal's father, he has also been booked under Section 180 of the Motor Vehicle Act (allowing unauthorised persons to drive vehicles), for allowing his son, who does not have a driving licence, to take the vehicle, the DCP said.

The police also said that prima facie, it appeared that the trio were not drunk. However, they said that medical reports will ascertain the facts. The deceased's body has been shifted to a mortuary and efforts to identify him are being made.
