The student organisations in West Bengal have given a call for strike in West Bengal, as a mark of their protest against the gang-rape of 23-year-old in New Delhi, who died on December 29, at a Singapore-based hospital.
The schools and universities remained closed on Thursday in Siliguri district following the instructions of the All-India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO).
Nomita Chakraborty, Secretary, AIDSO, said that they had called for a strike in the wake of the Delhi gang-rape incident.
"The incident which took place in Delhi and the unfortunate death of the victim sparked protests all over the country. The AIDSO has also called for a students' strike in West Bengal," said Chakraborty.
"We press our demand before the government that stringent action should be taken against sexual harassment in the schools," she added.
The 23-year-old young woman, whose gang-rape in New Delhi on December 16, triggered nationwide outrage and protests, died of severe internal injuries on December 29.
