Death toll in flood-hit Maharashtra districts surges to 29

Nearly 239 villages from Kolhapur and 329 villages from Sangli are enormously affected due to floods.

As the inundated situation in western Maharashtra persists death toll due to flood-hit Sangli, Kolhapur, Pune, Satara and Solapur has surged to 30. The region has been pummelled by heavy rains over the last few days. Nearly 239 villages from Kolhapur and 329 villages from Sangli are enormously affected due to floods. A helicopter is being deployed to drop relief material in the flood-ravaged areas of Sangli district and also to evacuate stranded people.

State Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil, who is visiting Sangli and Kolhapur, said "Nearly 2.52 lakh people have been evacuated in Sangli, Kolhapur and Pune and shifted to 272 temporary camps."

He further informed that the state disaster management control room, district administration, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), army, navy, air force  and coast guard personnel are jointly involved in relief operation. Besides, 22 NDRF teams from Odisha, Gujarat, and Punjab along with 26 teams of navy and two coast guard teams and two SDRF teams have been deployed in flood-ravaged Sangli.

In Kolhapur, one team of SDRF, eight teams of Army and nine teams of coast guard have been commissioned. Overall, 90 boats in Sangli and 76 in Kolhapur have been engaged in the evacuation of people stuck in the torrent.

Patil said the government has already disbursed Rs 154 crore to the Sangli and Kolhapur district collectors to distribute Rs 10,000 and Rs 15000 per family belonging to rural seven urban areas respectively. Whereas Rs 4 lakhs will be given to the family of the deceased. Taking jibe at previous state govt, Patil said, "During Congress-NCP regime, the rule was to provide help only if the damage is due to water lodging for eight days. We reduced it to two days and have increased the financial aid."

Meanwhile, the Karnataka government has responded to the request by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to increase water discharge from the Almatti dam. Around 4.50 lakh cusecs of water have now been discharged.

Fadnavis said the Prime Minister Narendra Modi took detailed information on the situation, rescue measures and assured all assistance from Central Government.
