Daman & Diu Lok Sabha constituency: Candidates for 2019 LS poll, past results, all updates

Daman & Diu Lok Sabha constituency is one of the smallest Lok Sabha constituencies in India. The constituency has little more than 1.21 lakh voters who are eligible to vote in 2019 Lok Sabha elections. 

The Union Territory, comprising two regions — Daman and Diu — that are geographically separated by the Arabian Sea in Western India, has a total population of 2.43 lakh (As per the Census of 2011). The area was a Portuguese colony since the 16th century and was annexed by India only in 1961. Goa, Daman and Diu were administered as a single union territory until 1987, when Goa was granted full statehood. Daman and Diu separately form two districts of the union territory and are approximately 650 kilometres away from each other by road.

The Daman & Diu Lok Sabha constituency is second smallest in the country after Lakshadweep in terms of the number of electors. The constituency has  121729 electors - 60986 male and  60743 female - as per electoral roll published on January 4, 1019. 

The sitting MP of Daman & Diu Lok Sabha seat is BJP's Lalubhai Patel who won by defeating Congress' Ketan Patel with a margin of little more than 9,000 votes. NOTA or None of the Above option received 1,316 votes.

The Lok Sabha seat which came into existence in 1987 has been won by the Congress and the BJP four times each. An independent candidate won from here in 1989. BJP's Lalubhai Patel has won the seat for two consecutive terms in 2009 and 2014 and will again face Congress' Ketan Patel whom he had defeated in the last election. 

The polling in Daman & Diu Lok Sabha constituency will be held in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections on April 23. The counting of votes will be held on May 23.
