Congress leader Amarinder Singh on Tuesday welcomed the decisions of the Election Commission with regard to the transfer of a police officer and the restriction on movements of Punjab Minister Bikram Singh Majithia.

"We were demanding for the last one month for the transfer of SSP Gurpreet Gill. Now he has been transferred which would pave way for free and fair elections," Amarinder said.

"I strongly condemn money misuse during elections. SSP Gurpreet Gill who was transferred on the orders of Election Commission was transporting money," he alleged.

Condemning Majithia for allegedly distorting a hymn in Gurbani, compositions of Sikh gurus, Amarinder hoped that Jathedar Akal Takht would decide the matter as per Sikh rituals without bowing to any pressure.

He said the entire Sikh community was highly upset with this "blasphemous act of Majithia", and praised the EC for restricting the movements of the minister in this regard.

On the elections, he expressed happiness with the actions of EC, which has ordered Punjab police to stay 150 metres away from the polling booth, saying this would ensure that the polls are held in a free and fair manner.

The Congress leader also condemned the alleged attack on journalist Davinder Singh at Chandigarh and expressed hope that police would arrest the culprits soon. PTI COR PRM
