The Congress on Friday made a slew of announcements — constituting a screening committee for Telangana in anticipation of early polls, revamping the minorities department in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, and appointing secretaries for each of the Northeastern states ahead of the 2019 elections.

In Telangana, with polls around the corner, a screening committee has been comprised of Bhakta Charan Das as chairperson, Sharmistha Mukherjee and Jothimani Sennimalai as members.

In Madhya Pradesh where Assembly elections are scheduled for January, Nitin Raut, chairman of the party's Scheduled Caste department, appointed Mahendra Singh Bodh as the acting chairman of the state SC committee, and appointed two vice-chairmen, five regional coordinators, and ten convenors.

Raut said that SC votes have a consequence in over 60 of the state's 230 constituencies. "There are several more constituencies where SC communities have a presence of more than 10 per cent. The SC department has already sent two observers to these places, dividing responsibilities between them. One will be responsible for reserved constituencies, while the other of constituencies where the SC population is more than 10 per cent," said Raut. There are 35 SC reserved constituencies in the state.

With an eye on the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the party also announced secretaries for each of the Northeastern states, barring Assam, that account for 11 Lok Sabha seats. Pradyot Manikya Debbarman has been made in-charge of Sikkim, Ampareen Lyngdoh of Meghalaya, Zenith Sangma of Arunachal Pradesh, Bhupen Borah of Tripura, Pradyut Bordoloi of Nagaland, Victor Keishing of Meghalaya and Charles Pyngrope of Manipur. In addition, Sudhir Sharma is now secretary in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir and Sirivella Prasad of Tamil Nadu.
