Bypolls in Assam: Voting begins in three assembly constituency

Voting is currently going on peacefully for by-elections in Assam's three assembly constituencies - Silchar, Lakhipur and Jamunamukh, according to Election Commission officials. 

Silchar is having a by-poll due to election of legislator Susmita Dev to Lok Sabha. The Lakhipur seat fell vacant after the death of MLA Dinesh Prasad Goala, while the Jamunamukh seat was vacated by AIUDF leader Sirajuddin Ajmal after being elected as a MP.  All total 25 candidates are in the fray. Over 5 lakh voters are expected to cast their vote. 

The polling started at 7 a.m. in almost all the 588 polling stations across the three polling stations, barring two polling stations under Jamunamukh constituency where voting could not start due to technical snags in the in EVMs.So far their has been brisk voting. The ruling Congress in the state is in backfoot after poor showing in the LokSabha polls. It will be interesting to see if it can manage to get some ground back.
