After adjourning the House for three consecutive days, the Maharashtra Legislative Council on Thursday suspended independent member Prashant Paricharak for one and half years over his derogatory remarks about  Indian soldiers’s wives.

BJP minister Chandrakant Patil who is also the leader of the Upper House proposed that Parichark must be suspended for a year and half for his condemnable and painful remarks. The proposal was passed by the House unanimously.

Opposition leaders, along with the ally Shiv Sena, had been seeking Paricharak's suspension since Monday when the Budget session started. The agitated members had not allow the House to function forcing the ruling party to put forth the proposal of suspension.

Meanwhile, an eight-member committee headed by the Council chairman has been constituted to probe the incident, record Paricharak’s version and recommend appropriate punishment-which could be termination of his membership or privilege motion against him for bringing disrepute to the House or even imprisonment. The committee is expected to submit its report in the Monsoon session.

Former NCP leader Paricharak (51) was elected for the Upper House as an independent candidate with the BJP support from Solapur Local Authorities seat last year. His term expires January 2022.

While addressing a rally in Solapur in support of BJP candidates in the fray for the local body polls last month, Paricharak had remarked, "A soldier gets a telegram from his wife that she has delivered a baby and he distributes sweets among his colleagues even as he has not visited home during whole year. This is the level of politics we have stooped to.”

The remarks were made in the context of his criticism of the NCP leaders who he said were taking credit for water supply from Ujani dam in Solapur district, which is a sensitive issue in the arid belt.

As the video clip of his speech went viral, Paricharak was slammed. Later, he expressed “regret” over his choice of words. In a video released, the MLC said he was only trying to highlight the “credit-seeking” mindset of his political opponents.
