Senior BJP leader and Law and Justice and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad along with five others were elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar on Thursday.

The formalities were completed by Returning Officer for Rajya Sabha Election cum Bihar Assembly secretary Ram Shrestha Rai after the deadline of withdrawing nomination papers ended on Thursday afternoon.

A total of six Rajya Sabha seats, all held by members of the ruling alliance, were to come up for vacancy from Bihar on April 2. The Grand Alliance thus benefited as both the ruling BJP-JD(U) coalition and Opposition RJD-Congress combine fielded three candidates each. "As six nominations were filed against six seats and all papers were found to be valid, the winners were announced and certificates of election were handed over to them to complete the due process," an official said.

Prasad, who has been elected to the Upper House for the fourth time, thanked the people of Bihar for their "love, affection and support". Apart from him, the NDA nominees were sitting Rajya Sabha MP and Bihar JD(U) president Bashistha Narain Singh and industrialist and JD(U) leader Mahendra Prasad Singh alias King Mahendra.

From the Grand Alliance, RJD spokesperson and University of Delhi professor Manoj Jha, Katihar Medical College MD Ashfaque Karim (RJD), and former union minister and Congress leader Akhilesh Prasad Singh made it to Rajya Sabha. Both Jha and Karim will be first timers while Singh will open the account for Congress, which so far had no Rajya Sabha representative from Bihar.
