A motley group of sadhus and activists on Friday urged the Centre to enact and implement in totality the National River Ganga Rejuvenation, Conservation & Management bill as drafted by late Prof GD Agarwal and warned of agitation if their demand was not met.

The message comes nearly two weeks after the former IIT-Kanpur professor, also known as Swami Sanand, died on the 111th day of his fast for a clean Ganga.

"This government did not pay heed to Sanandji's repeated pleas and fast unto death. Even Mughals and British did not touch Holy Ganga," said Swami Shivanand of Matri Sadan, Haridwar.

Showing the last video message of Prof. Agarwal from hospital where he is seen speaking coherently on Ganga, Shivanand broke down and slammed the decision of AIIMS doctors to put him on intravenous. He said Prof Agarwal died minutes later. He termed his death a murder.

"We are warning the government that if it continues to show apathy towards Ganga, this movement of saints to die for Ganga will pick up more steam.

"We will end your thirst with our blood but ensure natural and pristine flow of Ganga," said Shivanand. He added that the only way out is to junk the Centre's bill and implement the Ganga rejuvenation bill as drafted by Swami Sanand in letter and spirit.

Noted water conservationist Dr Rajendra Singha, also called 'Waterman of India', said his organisation Tarun Bharat Sangh has decided to make Ganga rejuvenation a national people's movement to ensure that Prof Agarwal's supreme sacrifice doesn't go in vain.

"The Ganga Act drafted by the Centre is very dangerous. It makes small wrongs done by faithfuls non-bailable offence but allows contractors, corporates and engineers who do irreparable damage to Ganga to earn profit and go scot-free," said Singh.
