The post-mortem on the carcasses of 13 peacocks found in Nashik district earlier this week has cited extreme heat conditions as the cause of death. The district has been hit by a heat wave, with the daytime temperature hovering around 40 degrees Celsius.

The dead birds were spotted on Thursday behind a petrol pump in Manmad Nagapur Shivar. After being alerted by the villagers, a team of officials from the animal husbandry and forest departments had sent visceral samples of the carcasses for analysis.

“The birds died due to sunstroke,” said B R Dhakare, officer of Nandgaon forest range, quoting the post-mortem report.

The death of the beautiful birds, which are fairly big as compared to many avian species, signal tough days for farmers and people of the region which faces water scarcity throughout the year. It becomes severe during the summer.

To prevent more casualties, Dhakare said, the forest department is making arrangements towards providing water for birds and animals inside forested stretches of the region. Last year, the department had made water available in the forests with the help of the Nashik branch of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India (CREDAI).

“We had taken the responsibility of filling the waterholes with the help of tankers. There are nine waterholes in this forest range and we kept filling them till rains came. It had given good results as water was made available to the animals and birds in their habitat,” said Kiran Chavan, a functionary from the developers’ association.

The organisation has similar plans for this year too. Jayesh Thakkar, president, Nashik chapter, said, “We will send a team to the region to do a survey. CREDAI will be happy to take up the project of saving the birds and animals by providing water.”
