Ten persons, including eight girl student of an Intermediate College, were killed when a dumper hit the tempo they were riding head on near Bargarh on Jhansi-Mirzapur National Highway in Chitrakoot district of Uttar Pradesh on Monday.

The students, aged between 16 and 20, were students of Chandresh Inter College in Chitrakoot in Bargarh. They were returning home in a tempo after attending college on Monday afternoon. They could have barely moved one km ahead of their college when a speeding dumper lost control and hit the tempo head on.

All the eight girls died on the spot while the driver and another passenger succumbed to injuries in the hospital. The driver of the dumper ran away after the accident. The police and college staff rushed to the spot and informed their family members.

Agitated parents and others set the dumper on fire and indulged in heavy brick-batting damaging several vehicles. They held a demonstration and jammed the Jhani-Mirzapur National Highway for hours.

The jam was lifted only after assurance from the district administration to arrest the driver and provide adequate compensation to the families of victims killed in the accident.
