The air quality this year is worse than last few years. Reason being the cumulative effect of vehicular pollution, smoke and dust from road and construction sites. It's often said that the air we breathe in Delhi is equivalent to smoking 50 cigarettes in a day.

The steps to improve the quality of air may not be a simple task but here are seven steps to lower the risk of pollution related respiratory and cardiac issues. 

Follow these tips to protect yourself from the air pollution and stay healthy

1. Use pollution mask if you are venturing out
Every time you step out make sure to wear a good quality pollution mask. You can buy anti-pollution masks online as per your convenience. 

2. Say NO to smoking
To keep yourself and your family healthy, do not smoke. Your lungs will thank you for this.

3. Eat right to boost immunity
Eating an balanced diet will improve your immune system and ward off the diseases. Your diet should include vegetables and fruits rich in omega fatty acids, vitamin C, and magnesium. These are the foods you could eat to boost your immunity. Also make sure you are drinking enough water.

4. Install an air purifier
You can buy air purifier these days and it is the best way to fight to air pollution. If you have an air purifier, at least your home will have pollution-free air to breathe. Turn off the air purifier and open the window when you know the pollution is low.

5. Install an app to monitor pollution
There are several app available to monitor outdoor air pollution. Download and install the app on your phone and check the pollution level before you step out. The government of India has launched SAFAR-Air, a mobile app that can tell you about the air pollution.

6. Drink herbal tea
Herbal teas like ginger tea and Tulsi tea are beneficial. They will not only sooth your sore throat but will also help improve immunity.

7. Bring some indoor plants
There are many plants that purify the air. It will help reduce the air pollution in your house and are easy to maintain and are handy.
