Why Venus dimples have become the new rage in Hollywood

Every few months, there’s that one cosmetic surgery that catches the fancy of the rich and the reckless. While liposuction, nose restructuring, eyelid surgery, facelifts, and breast augmentation are now common, others become a rage for a short duration. Getting the Joker smile was one such trend, that saw women reshaping their lips to flaunt a rather wide-grinned smile. Then there was the Brazilian butt lift (where doctors inject fat into a patient’s bottom, giving it a better shape. But that’s a matter of the past. While India is yet to experience it, in countries like the US and the UK, there’s an increasing demand for Venus dimples.

What are Venus dimples?

Venus dimples are dimple-like indents on your lower back. Like dimples on people’s cheeks, these indents are seen just above a person’s posterior. A recent report in the Daily Mail says that the procedure, which starts at £4,900 (around `4 lakh) and takes up to three months to be visible, is the newest trend there. While many international models like Kendall Jenner and Miranda Kerr and on the home front — Malaika Arora and Deepika Padukone — sport these natural dents on either side of their lower spine, there are those who are willing to visit the doctor to get them.

It’s a simple procedure

Aesthetic surgeon Dr Aamod Rao says, “This is a procedure done under local anesthesia. It’s done in a day. People who want to get it, can visit the clinic, get it and go. It doesn’t require any hospitalistaion. But yes, it’s very expensive to get it done in other countries. But most people have it. When you lose fat, it’ll start showing more. I haven’t heard of many people opting for it here. I had done one in Brazil, but that was a long time ago.”

Relatively new here

While in other countries like the US and the UK, it’s a known procedure, people here haven’t yet fallen prey to the trend. Board-certified cosmetic and plastic surgeon Dr Viral Desai says, “It’s a relatively new concept here. Not many people have done it, but more and more people are asking about it.” He explains the procedure saying, “Just above the butt area, there’s a natural ligament attached there. The process includes removal of fat in those layers, so automatically the skin indents there. You mark the line out and when you remove fat, you remove a little more there. So a depression is created.”

Who wants these?

Dr Desai says, “Mostly, it’s women between 18 to 30 who go for it. Women who are past that age group often want tummy tucks or other such treatments. Women who wear clothes that emphasise their back, often opt for Venus dimples.” Dr Rao adds, “Those who wear low-waist jeans or clothes that focus on their back, or a bikini often like to sport them. Venus dimples are considered as a mark of beauty. Venus, the Roman goddess of beauty, apparently had a beautiful lower back with these dimples. That’s the reason they are named after her.”
