Actress Sonakshi Sinha and Shazahn Padamsee rig up to play 1980’s sexy sirens — Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi — in their most sensuous avatars. Time to take some style notes, as we seek advice on how to flaunt the era of Michael Jackson and flower power in a place where the glamourous are born, trends emerge and are adapted by one and all. We give you easy tips on aping the ’80s trend without creating a hole in your pocket.

Designer Sakshee Pradhan says, “Indeed, the ’80s era is not only making a comeback on the silver screen, but also in the fashion circuit. We can easily ape ’80s fashion in our 2013 wardrobe in the form of trench coats, bright neon-coloured separates, acid-washed jeans, shell suits, off-shoulder chiffon/georgette tops, floral prints, padded shoulders, chiffon saris and matching scarves.”

While, there might be a lot of variations from that time, Rick Roy, costume designer and stylist suggests that we need not copy the trend to a tee, but we can borrow style elements, “It is good to take ideas and elements such as the colour block strips that you can layer in a solid colour on top. I like high waist belts and big colourful fake flowers are easy to adapt. You can also wear a basic shirt and add a big flower broach. Another style statement is the high-waist mini skirts; the distressed denim with studs and spikes is so fabulous. Lastly, let’s not forget the spiky look with leather as well, a hint of the neon colour trend and viola, we have a disco girl.”

So while ’80s scream colour, there are also some silhouettes that can trim us. Anita Dongre, designer elaborates, “Girls should opt for the high waisted pencil skirts with beautiful floral or chaotic/abstract prints. Give your look the ’80s feel by pairing it with a solid-coloured tank top and a neon-coloured crop jacket with a stunning pair of studded pointed toe shoes.

1980s was all about young, whimsy and fun fashion — so style your hair with mousse and tie a sexy side bun or just wear pop coloured headbands for the big and messy hairdo. Accessorise your outfit with a statement neckpiece or a stack of thin bracelets/bangles.”

A style tip to keep in mind is, don’t go over-the-top, but maintain an ’80s-inspired look. For instance, neon-coloured leggings/tights teemed up with a dark coloured trench coat or coat dress. Sakshee concludes, “Eighties inspired off shoulder chiffon top paired with a 2013 pencil skirt will look cool.”
