Shaandaar: Shahid Kapoor's biggest opener fails to storm the box office!

Shaandaar raked in Rs 11 crore on day one. While it does mean that Shaandaar is indeed Shahid's biggest opening so far, the film could hardly make use of the Dussehra holiday.

Time and again, filmmakers, producers and actors long to have a solo release in Bollywood. And if the release coincides with a national holiday, that's almost like a double bonanza. A similar thing happened with Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer Shaandaar as well. A good release date, great hype and publicity, striking chemistry between the lead pair and a solo release- Shaandaar had everything working in its favour. Yet the film could hardly make enough use of all that.

Shahid and Alia's film had an amazing buzz before it hit screens and it was expected to create a storm at the box office, given that it's Vikas Bahl's second directorial venture after the supremely successful Queen and also that it was a national holiday for Dussehra. The film managed to rope in Rs 11 crore nett on day one which is definitely not good, keeping all the advantages that Shaandaar had in place already.

With an eleven crore opening, the film has definitely turned out to be the biggest opener for Shahid Kapoor but has failed to beat Alia's best, which still stands with 2 States (it had earned a little over Rs 12 crore on day 1). The film had an underwhelming opening in the key mass centres and the best business came from Delhi and Mumbai, followed by Punjab. Other circuits remained dull, despite it being a national holiday.

Plus, from average to negative reviews for the film, and critics almost panning the film, Shaandaar is not expected to grow on a good word of mouth, which was the case with Bahl's earlier release Queen. The collections might nosedive over the weekend and the film now needs to maintain a consistent figure in the next three days to put up a good show at the ticket counters.

A figure of over Rs 15 crore would definitely been more satisfying but given that the film will drop on Friday, it's only how it holds on Saturday and Sunday which will help us predict the fate of the film at the box office. But as a complete package, the film has definitely failed to deliver and how!
