WHAT’S IT ABOUT:
In recent years, Eid has become synonymous with the release of a Salman Khan film. This time, the actor-producer brings to the screen what is easily his most heartwarming offering. Bajrangi Bhaijaan is the near-perfect package when it comes to commercial cinema – love, religion and patriotism all in perfect measure. Pavan Chaturvedi (Salman Khan) is a happy-go-lucky guy living in Delhi trying to build his own life so that he can marry Rasika (Kareena). Brought up amidst strict Hindu surroundings, Pavan is a devoted bhakt of Lord Hanuman, which is why he is popularly addressed as Bajrangi. Life changes for Pavan one day when he encounters a six-year-old mute girl who has lost her way. He discovers she is from Pakistan. When all attempts to send her back to her country fail, Pavan takes the responsibility himself. Without a passport or a valid visa, he steps into Pakistan to reunite the girl with her parents. Helping him in his mission is small-time local journalist from the neighbouring country Chaand Nawab (Nawazuddin).
WHAT’S HOT:
Bajrangi Bhaijaan is a massive and refreshing change from all the Salman Khan films you’ve seen over the last few years. And it’s a bold step from Khan, who turns producer with this film, because he simply shatters every stereotype about him. Pavan’s character devoid of glamour, attitude or star-quality. He’s simple, unassuming and earnest. Director Kabir Khan captures the progression of Pavan’s character brilliantly through his screenplay. As Pavan’s bonding with the child grows, so does the heroic streak in his character even though it’s always under played. Kabir has a simple way of narration and it works perfectly with a story of this nature. The romantic scenes between Pavan and Rasika are charming. Kabir’s pulls out an ace when he establishes the relationship between Pavan and the child – several tender moments that are guaranteed to keep you moist-eyed. The entire part of the otherwise strict Hindu Pavan’s acceptance and attachment towards a Muslim girl and her religion is a classic touch. The film’s second half is its biggest triumph when the story moves into Pakistan. The last 30 minutes of the film will tug at your heartstrings. The performances by the lead cast are also fantastic. Salman as Pavan literally drops all his guards. It’s easily his most consistent and earnest performance so far. Kareena Kapoor is spectacular even in a role that’s short in length. Child star Himalee is brilliant. Nawazuddin is a riot with his one-liners and a highlight in the second half. His rousing video message towards the film’s climax will give you goose bumps.
WHAT’S NOT:
The first half could’ve done with a bit of trimming. And also the portion where Pavan enters Pakistan for the first time through the border – it had the potential to be scripted better.
WHAT TO DO:
Bajrangi Bhaijaan is the best Salman Khan film in recent years. And the perfect film this festive season. Go for it!
