The COVID-19-induced lockdown, which came into effect last year, had forced educational institutions such as schools and colleges to close down in order to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Students have been waiting in anticipation since then for their schools to reopen. Twitter is flooded with questions about the reopening of schools by students from Karnataka, Punjab, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.
While few schools had resumed the offline classes last year in November 2020, others decided to open it in February 2021. Since the COVID-19 curve in the country is on a decline now, states are expected to permit educational institutions to resume offline classes soon.
The first on the list is Himachal Pradesh, as the state on June 11 announced the opening of medical, Ayurvedic, dental, nursing, and pharmacy colleges in the state.
The opening of the schools and colleges will be in a phased manner, wherein the students would be required to carry a written consent in order to attend the offline classes. This rule has been mandated by all states. Precautionary measures like washing hands, maintaining a physical distance between students, and other Covid appropriate behavior will be made compulsory.
Delhi
The schools will continue with online classes as of now due to the ongoing second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in the country.
Himachal Pradesh
Medical colleges, Ayurvedic colleges, and dental colleges will reopen from June 23, whereas Pharmacy and nursing schools will resume physically from June 28.
Jammu and Kashmir
The state has decided to keep its schools, colleges, universities, technical education institutes, skill development institutes, and coaching centres to remain closed till June 30, 2021. The decision was taken after assessing the current situation regarding COVID-19 in the state.
Maharashtra
Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant on Tuesday announced that the MHT CET(Maharashtra Common Entrance Test) examination held for professional courses after class 12 n the state will be held either in the last week of July or the first week of August.
Telangana
The state has extended the summer vacation period for schools and colleges till June 20.
Kerala
The state has eased the restrictions in lockdown and allowed Public examinations in the state.
Andhra Pradesh
A social media post of ANI said: “Andhra Pradesh Govt has decided to make ‘English medium’ compulsory across all government, private aided and unaided degree colleges in the state from the academic year 2021-22: Chief Minister's Office.”
Karnataka
The UG, PG programmes for the next academic year will begin in October 2021.
Tamil Nadu
No announcement regarding the opening of schools and colleges has come from the state. It will make an announcement after assessing the current COVID-19 situation in the state.
Haryana
The state government has extended the duration of summer vacation until June 30 for school students.
Assam
The Assam government decided to keep shut all the educational institutions even after summer vacation, which ended on June 14, after gauging the COVID-19 situation in the state. The concerned authorities have been ordered to continue conducting online classes.
Uttar Pradesh
There has been no announcement regarding the opening of schools and colleges by the state government. The latest notice issued by the state was that schools and colleges should continue with online classes from May 20 onwards.
Punjab
Punjab Education Minister Vijay Inder Singla, on May 22 had announced that schools- government, semi-government, and private will stay shut from May 24 to June 23.
Odisha
“As children are at risk in the third wave of Covid-19, the government is making all infrastructure ready to face the situation. Only after reviewing the situation in coming days, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will take the appropriate decision on reopening of schools,” said School and Mass Education Minister, Samir Ranjan Dash on Sunday.
