Poor results led to protests across the state, as 64% students failed in Board exams
Around 3.25 lakh students, who appeared for the Class 12 exams of the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB), have applied for scrutiny of their answer sheets. This year, over 7.94 lakh of the 12.6 lakh students (64 per cent students), who took the Intermediate exams 2017, failed to clear the tests.
The poor results led to large scale protests across the state, and the students demanded a re-evaluation of the answer sheets. There were several students, who claimed to have cleared various competitive exams, including the JEE (Mains), but had failed in the boards.
Following the protests, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar asked all dissatisfied students to apply for scrutiny of copies, if they felt they had not attained marks as per the answers they had written. He said the results were a reflection of the strictness followed in conduct of examination and evaluation.
Senior BSEB officials said the Board only provides for scrutiny of answer sheets not re-evaluation, in which it is checked whether all questions answered by the students have been marked and if the marks have been added properly.
The number of copies that have come for scrutiny is 7.25 lakh, as one student can apply for scrutiny in multiple subjects. Of these, the scrutiny of over 58,000 copies have been completed by the Board till Wednesday. Maximum applications have been received from students pursuing Science.
The BSEB has made elaborate arrangements for scrutiny of the answer sheets, and has asked evaluators to finish the work latest by June 25. “The scrutiny of applications is likely to be completed by June 15 and information related to it will be uploaded on our website. Those students who have provided their mobile numbers, will be updated via messages,” a senior BSEB official said.
The official further added, “All security measures have been put in place including installation of CCTV cameras and videography at the centres. Nodal officers have been deputed in the districts to coordinate and quicken the publication of results. All results of the scrutiny will be published by June 30.”
