Speeding truck runs over, kills traffic cop

The truck was spotted and signalled to stop but instead the driver ran over the constable. He was rushed to a private hospital in East Delhi where he succumbed to his injuries.

A Delhi police constable was run over by a speeding truck while he was on duty in North Delhi's Kotwali area. The incident occurred on Saturday morning when the Delhi Traffic Police constable intercepted the truck for driving in a rash and negligent manner.

According to the police, the truck driver was intercepted after he was seen overtaking a vehcicle in a rash manner. The traffic policeman was identified as Binesh Kumar, a native of Aligarh. Kumar, along with three others, were deployed at the check post near the Geeta colony flyover.

The truck was spotted and signalled to stop but instead the driver ran over the constable. He was rushed to a private hospital in East Delhi where he succumbed to his injuries.

Kumar, who was deployed at the Kotwali traffic circle, is survived by his wife and a three year old daughter. He was inducted into the force in 2010. A case under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 186 (obstructing a public servant), 353 (assault to deter a public servant from discharge of his duties), 279 (rash driving) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering personal safety of others) of the IPC and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act has been registered. Police are hunting for the errant truck driver.
