Tension prevailed at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) after a group of right-wing activists and students entered the campus raising "provocative" slogans on Tuesday, almost a week after a similar incident took place at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Amid slogans like "Jinnah premi Bharat chhodo", "Vande Mataram" and "Hinduon ko darana band karo", the group, including some university students, marched from Okhla's Sarai Jullena area to JMI's main gate at around 5:30 pm."They were shouting provocative slogans and carrying banners with outrageous messages. It's clearly an attempt to create a hostile atmosphere at the campus," said Mohammad Salim, a PhD scholar.

The students, who were present at the spot, said that most of the protesters in the mob were outsiders. "They were not looking like university students. They were shouting slogans related to AMU's Jinnah controversy. It's an attempt to repeat what had happened in AMU," he added.

However, members of the right-wing group said they were protesting against the "harassment" that Hindu students witness in Jamia. "We were receiving complaints of Hindu students being harassed and threatened by fellow students at the campus. Many students were bullied on social media on the basis of their identity for posting something on AMU-Jinnah controversy," said Jatin Jain, a BSc student at JMI and one of the protester.

Later in the evening, Jamia students held a protest in the university demanding the administration to file a police complaint in the matter. "How can outsiders enter our campus and create tension like this. The administration should immediately look into this," said Imran Choudhary, president NSUI, JMI.

Meanwhile, JMI's Public Relation Officer Saima Saeed said that the protest was on the road and not in the university premises. "The protest was on the public road and university has no control over it. We hope and pray that nobody tries to disturb the harmony at the campus," she said.
