People point out where the govt has scope to improve

Shakya Shamik, student, Ambedkar University
The outright disrespect of democratic institutions is not new in India but I feel this trend has intensified since the Modi government came to power in 2014. The free-flowing divisive efforts of extra-political forces such as the RSS evidently show how the ruling dispensation is inherently guided by the communal design of the Sangh Parivar.

There are both positives and negatives about this government. Being a handicapped person, I am happy that the government increased our monthly allowance from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,500. But rather than merely giving allowances, the government should have focused more on employment generation in the last four years. I don’t think they can do any better now.”

Hrishita Rajbangshi, student, Jawaharlal Nehru University
The journey of the NDA government began with huge pomp and show four years ago. But it has definitely not been able to fulfil most of its promises. One major area where the government has failed is higher education. Dissenting opinions have been silenced and minorities are being threatened now and then. This has fractured the diverse culture of India.

Serious issues are left unaddressed. Instead of making education more accessible to students from all sections of society, the government seems to have restricted it to constant attacks on academic spaces across the country. Also, scholarships have been cut down significantly. As a student, I feel very distressed at all of this.

Modiji promised us acche din before being elected as Prime Minister. But it seems to have been a poll gimmick. The policy of changing fuel prices on a daily basis has hurt our profession. While fuel prices have only been going up, our fares have remained the same for a long time. Consequently, our incomes have significantly dipped.

I am happy with the present government. My family got an LPG cylinder for the first time after Narendra Modi came to power. Also, I feel that the work culture, especially in the government departments, has improved in the country because of this government. GST is another good step which has benefitted the public exchequer and the national economy.

Satwinder Singh, owner of an electronics store, Kanhaiya Nagar
As businessmen, we were severely hit by GST implementation last year. Our monthly sales dwindled to half of what they had been, as prices of electronic products inflated due to GST. I am disappointed with this government because of their indifference to traders. On the other hand, big industrialists are routinely helped by the government.
