Mass marriage: FIR against 11 more couples

The Gautam Budh Nagar police have lodged an FIR against 11 more couples for allegedly remarrying in the Uttar Pradesh government's mass wedding scheme after it came to fore that around more married couples had participated in the ceremony for monetary gains on Friday. However, all the couples are absconding, police said.

According to the police, a complaint was given by chief development officer who is heading the committee formed by the district magistrate to look into the matter, have found 11 more couples at fault.

"While inspecting about the couples, it came to notice that 11 more couples from Bambabaad village of Badalpur are also found at fault as these couples were already married and had gone through the procedure only to avail of benefits under the mass wedding scheme of the government," said Anil Kumar Singh, chief development officer (CDO) of the district.

Police have lodged an FIR and are hunting for the couples.

"We have booked them under sections 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant, or by banker, merchant or agent), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. However, all the couples are absconding from the area. We have formed teams to nab them," said Mukesh Kumar, Station House Officer of Badalpur Police Station.

Earlier, the district administration of Gutam Budh Nagar had lodged an FIR against four couples, gram pradhan Babita Bhati of Cheeti village and her husband Dharmendra Bhati for misusing the government scheme by enabling married couples to participate, in which three men were arrested out of the six. Police said, family members of Bhati threatened the CDO to withdraw the complaint be filed against them.

" The people who threatened the CDO have also been arrested," said a senior police officer.

Sources revealed that the district magistrate has sent a report to the state government about the involvement of two officials from the administration in the mass wedding.

On Feburary 24, as many as 66 couples tied the knot under the program named 'Mukhyamantri Samoohik Vivaah Yojana'.

In October 2017, the Uttar Pradesh government had launched a mass marriage scheme where Rs 35,000 is given to each couple, including household items as gifts. Under the scheme, Rs 20,000 is deposited in the bride's bank account, Rs 10,000 is spent on gifts and Rs 5,000 spent on expenses incurred in the wedding arrangements.
