Come January 14 and you might get to see none other than Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his ministers flying kites. After a gap of an year, the Delhi government’s Tourism Department is all set to host the annual Kite Festival.

The three-day festival, however, will see a shift in the venue. The event will now be hosted in the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) Park of Dwarka Sector-10. The DDA did not give permission to organise the festival in the Golden Jubilee Park, where the festival was usually held.

“The event will be organised in Dwarka from January 14-16. The three days will witness some of the most enthralling kite-related events,” said Delhi Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra. “We couldn’t organise the event last year as we did not get the DDA nod. So, we decided to change the venue this year to ensure that Delhiites didn’t miss out on the festival,” he added.

The DDA and the Delhi government have been at loggerheads with each other over several issues. The state had even demanded that the agency be brought under its control, for better planning and development in the national Capital.

Meanwhile, the Delhi tourism officials said expert kite flyers from across India, including from Kerala, Chennai, Rajkot, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, and Mangalore, will participate in the event. “Famous international kite flyers are also likely to participate. The Delhi International Kite Festival has a lot in store, as the sport is loved by classes and masses alike,” a Delhi tourism official said.

Apart from the main event, the Tourism Department has also planned to set up theme stalls displaying kites of different sizes, from one square inch to 70 square inch, and made of different materials, such as tissue paper, elastic paper, bamboo, and cloth. “The festival will give citizens an opportunity to celebrate. We also plan to promote street food of the national Capital through the event. A kite-making competition for the children will be held and temporary kite museum will be set up to showcase the rich history of the art form,” a Delhi tourism official said.
