The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration, on Thursday, blamed the varsity students for maligning its image by propagating "false information related to an incident leading to the disappearance of Najeeb Ahmed", a first year MSc student.

"Despite all the steps taken by the varsity to trace Najeeb Ahmed, certain groups of students, along with the university's students' union, have been consistently spreading false information and making unfounded allegations against the administration. This has been creating further hindrance in locating Najeeb and resolving the issue," the varsity administration said in a statement.

"The administration has written to the JNUSU several times, asking them to refrain from indulging in dharnas, sit-ins, loud protest marches, and offensive sloganeering in and around the administration building, as per the university rules. The JNUSU, however, has not desisted from doing so," the statement read.

The varsity also listed a series of developments in the case of Najeeb, a resident of Badaun district in Uttar Pradesh, who has been missing since October 15 following an altercation with some ABVP members the night before at the Mahi Mandavi hostel.

The students, meanwhile, rejected the administration's claims, calling them "a complete bunch of lies". "JNU administration has constantly been trying to shield ABVP members," the students said. They have been sitting on an indefinite sit-in for the last three days.
