In a resident-friendly move, the Delhi government has decided to authorise the colleges to give Learner's driving licence to the students. The announcement was made by Delhi Transport Minister on Saturday.

"Young and studying in Delhi? You can soon get your Learner's Driving License from your college itself. Delhi govt empowers Directors and Principals of Colleges, Polytechnics and ITIs to issue Learner's License. Over 2 lakh students will benefit each year (sic)" tweeted Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot.

A Learner's Licence is valid for up to six months. The initiative will help about two lakh students from various colleges, polytechnics and ITIs in Delhi. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal retweeted the announcement and called it a "big step in cutting red tape" and "reducing corruption."

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi has launched several schemes to provide easier access to services. Earlier, the government announced that applicants of driver's licence will be able to get it delivered to their home by paying a nominal amount of Rs 50 extra.

Applicants will have to call a helpline number, which is being set up. Once the appointment is fixed, a 'mobile sahayak' will visit their home to fill the online forms. This will be exactly like approaching a helpdesk that we have set up at regional transport offices (RTO), but here the helpdesk will actually come to your home," said an official last month.

Though the online form filling services are already active, there are many people who face difficulties during this process. Vehicle registration certificates (RC) can also be obtained through this process.

Applicants must have a learners' licence and upon submission of the online application, they will be given a slot for the driving test which will be conducted at the RTO. Once the test is cleared, the permanent driving licence will be delivered to their doorstep.
