Mansi, 8, eldest of the three siblings, who died due to starvation in the national Capital was the first to fall sick but despite repeated requests by the neighbours, the parents did not consult a doctor. Mangal Singh, the father would often be found drunk and sleeping in his rickshaw before it got stolen. Beena, the mother is mentally unstable and undergoing treatment IHBAS.

The colony where the family resides has about 10 houses, mostly occupied by daily wage labourers. Neighbours said that they were not aware that the children were starving as most of the children in the colony keep asking for food randomly."Their children would also ask. Some people would give snacks but some would just ask them to go away," said one of the neighbours. The family did not have a ration card, which is not uncommon in the area.

Doctors who carried out the post-mortem of the kids revealed that their cheeks and eyes had popped out."Stomachs of the children were empty as they had not eaten for days," said a doctor.

Police are waiting for the viscera reports in order to check what exactly the children had consumed which led to their death.

The two other girls, Parul and Shikha could have probably been infected from Mansi.

Singh's close friend Narayan said even their previous landlord had asked him to help the family. "Singh and Beena got married after he left his first wife in 2002. Later on, after the birth of three girls, Beena was unwell and Singh did not have money for her treatment. He used to be drunk most of the times," said Narayan.

The first post-mortem report stated that the gallbladder of the victims was distended and filled with bile and their liver was pale in appearance. "The cause of death is malnutrition/starvation and its complication," stated the post-mortem report.

A board of doctors re-examined the bodies at the GTB hospital. The re-examination would help ascertain whether they the kids were poisoned. A forensic team inspected the place where the family was staying and found some medicine bottles and pills also.
