The Delhi Police informed a city court on Wednesday that it has registered an FIR against a woman on the basis of a complaint filed by her fourth husband. The complaint stated that the woman had cheated several men by marrying and then extorting money from them.

The police’s action was in compliance with the orders of the court passed on February 9 when Metropolitan Magistrate Neha Gupta Singh directed them to register an FIR against the woman.

“From the documents on record it seems the accused has performed several marriages and has used those marriages to dupe and extort money from the husband. Present matter need thorough investigation,” the judge had said in the last order.

The complainant, Balvinder Singh, a truck driver, had moved an application to register an FIR against his wife Shalu alias Malkit Kaur. In his plea, filed through advocate PrashantManchanda, Singh alleged that he met Shalu in November 2011 following which they were married. In October 2014, a son was born and then problems started.

The complaint filed through advocate Prashant Manchanda said that Shalu, deliberately picked fights and arguments with Singh and his family for no reason and also threatened to implicate the family in a false case if she was not given Rs 10 lakh. Following this, she left the house deserting both her husband and child and despite repeated attempts to get her back, she did not return.

The complaint said that Singh then looked into Shalu’s background and, in doing so, he stumbled upon the family of a person, who turned out to be the first husband of Shalu. It also said that Shalu’s first husband told him that that they had married in 2005 and after two-three years of marriage she deserted him.

The complaint claimed more such marriages were unearthed, where Shalu had deserted her previous husbands and extorted money from them by threatening to implicate them in false cases.

Police registered the FIR under sections 494 (marrying again during lifetime of husband or wife), 495 (same offence with concealment of former marriage from person with whom subsequent marriage is contracted), 384 (punishment for extortion), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code at Samaipur Badli police station in Rohini district.
