IPL Auction 2019: Unheralded architect-turned-cricketer Varun Chakravarthy fetched a sensational bid of Rs 8.4 crore, more than 40 times his base price, while veteran Yuvraj Singh was sold for his base price at the 2019 IPL Player Auction.
Chakravarthy, with a base price of Rs 20 lakh, went to Kings XI Punjab after a bidding war that also involved Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. Shivam Dube from Mumbai also became an IPL star as he went for Rs 5 crore to RCB.
KXIP also spent big on England all-rounder Sam Curran, buying him for Rs 7.2 crore.
Medium pacer Jaydev Unadkat became a millionaire once again with a Rs 8.4 crore bid from Rajasthan Royals but the spotlight was firmly on Chakravarthy, the 27-year-old mystery spinner from Tamil Nadu who gave up a career as freelance architect to pursue cricket.
37-year-old Yuvraj, who was a sought after player in the IPL for a long time and during his prime, did not get any bid when his name came up. However, Mumbai Indians rescued him took him for his base price of Rs one crore.
Spinner Axar Patel (Rs five crore), pacer Mohit Sharma (Rs five crore) and Mohammad Shami (Rs 4.8 crore) were the other names to fetch big bids.
Royal Challengers Bangalore paid Rs 4.2 crore for Shimron Hetmyer. His teammate Brathwaite, the star of 2016 World T20, was sold to KKR for Rs five crore. Another West Indian to get an attractive deal was wicketkeeper Nicholas Pooran. The 23-year-old, who came with a base price of Rs 75 lakh, went for Rs 4.20 crore to KXIP.
Indian Test player Hanuma Vihari was sold to Delhi Capitals for Rs two crore, four times his base price.
Pacer Ishant Sharma, who had a base price of Rs 75 lakh, went to Delhi Capitals for Rs 1.1 crore while wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha was bought back by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 1.2 crore.
The high-profile unsold players were Cheteshwar Pujara, Brendon McCullum, Chris Woakes and Dale Steyn.

We are minutes away from IPL 2019 Player Auction now. KXIP have the most money to spend with Rs 36.2 crore, followed by the re-christened Delhi Capitals at Rs 25.5 crore. It is mandatory that every franchise spends a minimum Rs 61.5 crores out of their total purse of Rs 82 crores.
If you have a confusion over how many players will go under the hammer. Five new players were added to the list in the eleventh hour. According to Espncricinfo, the most notable inclusion is that of England limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan. The others are South African batsman Rassie van der Dussen, Australian fast bowler Riley Meredith, and two domestic Indian cricketers Mayank Dagar and Pranav Gupta.
The defending champions are ready. Chennai Super Kings are one the most settled sides going into the auction. They could but a couple of Indian players to boost their squad.

This time, with the World Cup in focus, major big players such as Glenn Maxwell, Aaron Finch, Mitchell Starc, etc., are giving the tournament a miss. It means that the primary focus in this year's IPL will be on the domestic players. Some of the Ranji stars could find a big opening tonight.
This particular reason, however, could well be a windfall for some of the domestic players and fringe players from overseas who will be available for the entire duration of IPL.
