India lost two wickets in quick succession as off-spinner Moeen Ali went through the gate of the Indian skipper, Virat Kohli. Kohli missed the ball completely as it turned sharply into him and crashed into off and middle stump as he was out for a duck. Kohli, who came in at the loss of Cheteshwar Pujara didn't read the ball off the hand as it kept coming in after pitching and went straight through the gate.

However, Virat Kohli didn't leave the field immediately as he thought the England side appealed for the stump out but the replays confirmed that the ball had indeed gone directly through into the stumps as the Indian captain recorded his 11th duck in the longest format of the game.

Kohli came in at No 4 after India lost the wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara as he gave a simple catch in the hands of Ben Stokes standing at first slip. Pujara, along with the half-centurion, Rohit Sharma, had rebuilt and stitched an 85-run stand before the two quick wickets took place.

India lost their other opener, Shubman Gill, in the second over of the innings as the Olly Stone dismissed him when he misjudged the line of the ball and shouldered arms to an incoming delivery and was plumb in front of the wicket.

India had won the toss and chose to bat first. India made three changes to their line-up for the second Test as Axar Patel, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav came into the side.
