The BSE Sensex rose over 100 points to open at 31,673.44 points and NSE Nifty gained 29 points to open at 9,881.2 points on Thursday against the last session's closing.

The shares of Infosys, Sun Pharma and Tata Motors were among the top gainers while the shares of Bajaj Auto and Maruti declined.

The shares of Infosys ( up1.47%), Sun Pharma (up 1.13%), Lupin (up 0.76%), Hero MotoCorp (up 0.64%), Tata Motors (up 0.93%) and Power Grid (up 0.66%) were among the top gainers while Bajaj Auto (down 0.68%), Maruti Suzuki (down 0.68%), Dr Reddy’s (down 0.59%), Adani Ports (down 0.79%), HUL (down 0.55%) declined.

The stocks of country's second largest IT giant, Infosys witnessed a jump over the news of Nandan Nilekani's return to the company. A day after Ravi Venkatesan, independent director and co-chairman of Infosys, met finance minister Arun Jaitley, the market was abuzz with strong rumours of Nandan Nilekani, one of its founders, returning as the chairman of the company.

Nilekani left Infosys in 2009 to take charge at the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the implementing agency of Aadhaar.

Liquor firms were also trading high on the indices after the Supreme Court clarification over December 15 order. The apex court clarified that the ban of sale in liquor shops and bar within 500 metres of highways was aimed at vends along roads connecting cities and not along stretches that fall inside the city or town areas governed by municipal bodies.

However, overseas, Asian stocks got a mixed bag. US stocks closed lower yesterday over President Donald Trump's statement that he would be willing to let the government shut down if his border wall would not be funded.
