Airlines line up discounts to fill new year empty flights

With the peak travelling season about to end in about a month, airlines have begun offering discounts on airfares to lure passengers during the lean period which follows from the second week of next year.

At present, the airlines are making hay out of the peak demand as lot of people travel this month particularly during the Christmas- New Year period. However, the demand suddenly drops after that leaving the airline management scratching its head, in order to fill the empty seats.

Ultra low-cost carrier AirAsia and market leader Indigo have already come up with heavy discounts offering cheap tickets. Rival airlines are expected to follow soon, claim industry analysts.

AirAsia has launched a "2018 Travel Deals" sale at starting price as low as Rs 999 for passengers flying within India. This sale has limited period offer and is available for booking till December 10, 2017, for travelling between December 04, 2017 and January 2019. Passengers flying to destinations like Bengaluru, Ranchi, Kolkata, Goa and many more places are also offered discounts having tickets ranging between Rs 1,099 and Rs 2,000.

Similarly, Indigo has launched low fares sale at a starting price of Rs 1,005. However, the deadline for booking and travelling period is not mentioned on its website, but tickets can be availed from the portal. With Indigo, a passenger can travel between Bagdogra and Guwahati at Rs 1,005, Jammu - Srinagar at Rs 1,112, Coimbatore-Chennai at Rs 1,195, Kochi - Chennai at Rs 1,215, Visakhapatnam at Rs 1,259, and Patna - Kolkata at Rs 1,264. Other destinations covered were- Agartala-Kolkata at Rs 1,282, Bengaluru-Chennai at Rs 1,285, Chennai - Coimbatore at Rs 1,298 and Guwahati-Bagdogra at Rs 1,305.

According to a recent report released by Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA), an advisory firm, India is all set to become the third largest aviation market in the world by 2027, generating close to 2.6 million direct, indirect and induced jobs. An IATA report released on Monday claim the domestic demand climbed 7.2% in October compared to October 2016, while capacity rose 6.6%.

India and China continued to lead all markets, with double-digit growth rates, the report added.
