In June 2013, a multi-day cloudburst in Uttarakhand caused devastating floods and landslides, becoming the country’s worst natural disaster since the 2004 tsunami. Landslides, due to the floods, damaged several houses and structures, killing those who were trapped. Now, director Abhishek Kapoor is set to recreate the natural disaster in his upcoming film Kedarnath; starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Sara Ali Khan.

The shooting of this love story with a spiritual touch is currently underway in Kedarnath. The film is essentially about the romance between Sushant and Sara’s characters and how despite several turmoils, their love emerges victorious. While the film is fictitious, the calamity that took place in Kedarnath, is part of the script. The Kedarnath temple was one of the sites that was not damaged. Our source reveals, “The film will showcase the devastating Uttarakhand floods, which caused massive destruction in the area and hundreds of lives were lost. The first schedule is underway in the foothills of the Himalayas, but the crew moves to Mumbai next in November where a lavish set is getting erected for the flood sequence.”

The source adds, “The makers have decided to shoot the flood scenes in a closed and controlled environment of a set. Such an elaborate sequence could not have been filmed in the real locations, hence the producers, Ekta (Kapoor), and Prernaa (Arora) decided to not compromise on the visuals and shoot in Mumbai. Currently, while the team continues to shoot in Kedarnath, the Mumbai sets are being erected.”

Sushant and Sara have prepped to shoot the physically draining flood sequences, because that will have them submerged in water for several hours a day.
