Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa on Monday declared that he had no faith in the fairness of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) even as he rejected an opposition demand in the state assembly for a CBI probe into alleged irregularities in Prerana Education Trust being run by Yeddyurappa’s sons.

Replying to an acrimonious debate initiated by leader of the opposition Siddaramaiah, Yeddyurappa admitted that his two sons, Vijayendra and Raghavendra, were members of the trust which had collected Rs27 crore in donations and is running engineering, MBA and degree. It has collected funds from public just like any other trust and its accounts have been audited. If there was any irregularities, then the Enforcement Directorate is free to initiate action.

Responding to Siddaramaiah’s allegation that the trust received a donation of Rs1.37 crore from Adarsh Developers and Rs10 crore from South West Mining Company Limited, a subsidiary of Jindal Steels, he said, “It is true that donations have been received, but it is wrong to say that the state government has shown any favours to these companies in return for their donations. Jindal group had donated Rs10 crore to construct an auditorium in their name and the state government has not issued any new mining leases for the company.”

He also denied Siddaramaiah’s allegation that the government favoured Adarsh Developers by helping them in denotification of previous lands and turning a blind eye to their encroachment of lands. Yeddyurappa took serious exception to allegations that the state-owned Mysore Minerals Limited had sub-leased its mining rights to Jindal group causing hundreds of crores of rupees losses to the state exchequer.

He offered to quit if the opposition proved misuse of even a single rupee in the trust or the state government showing any favour in return for the donations.

The chief minister hit back at Siddaramaiah, who demanded Yeddyurappa to quit or agree for a CBI probe. “We have lost faith in CBI as it is being misused by the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre,” said Yeddyurappa.

He challenged the opposition to agree for a Lokayukta probe or CID probe or a house committee probe if it was really interested to know the truth.
