BU vice-chancellor N Prabhu Dev wants “to be guided by the public” while taking a call about the shape the Bangalore School of Economics (BSE) will take. It is another matter that the much-hyped institution, which is meant to be run along the lines of the London School of Economics, still seems far from becoming a reality.

On Saturday, Dev made public a letter in which he asked people to suggest what would be the best course for the BSE. The three options he offered: to have the School of Economics under Bangalore University, to keep it outside Bangalore University and under the UGC Act, or to not have the School of Economics at all.

In the letter, the vice-chancellor also sought to clear the air regarding some allegations made in connection with the School of Economics.

“I have my apprehensions about the viability and sustenance of the Rs 100-crore project because of the vengeful attitude of a section of the administration,” Dev said in his letter.

“It requires a sense of deep commitment and passion to establish a School of Economics of global standards. In the light of the battering Bangalore University has received at the hands of few vested interests within BU in the last 45-50 days, and wild, baseless allegations and a smear campaign against me and Dr Sitharam Jindal, a decision has to be taken whether or not to establish the prestigious School of Economics to be funded by Jindal Group.”

The letter added: “Over the last one and a half months, there has been an atmosphere of intolerance and hatred in the university campus after the introduction of a change in the academic administration. A section of the Syndicate has openly articulated against the School of Economics. They have canvassed a total lie that land is sold to the Jindal group. A section of the media has given wide publicity to this lie. Instead of congratulating Dr Sitharam Jindal, a smear campaign has been started against the donor and the Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University with white lies. After initial approval of the Academic Council, the Study Group was constituted, which has just submitted a detailed report, which was to be placed before the Academic Council held on 27th December, 2011 and then to the Syndicate and Government. I was hurt by the smear campaign. I withdrew placing the report before the Academic Council in the last minute.”
