A 25-year-oldsoftware engineer Naveen Mantri (25) was arrested by the Mahadevapura police on Thursday in connection with the suicide of his wife Preeti Mantri (22).
Preeti had taken her life by hanging from the ceiling in her house at Kaggadasapura on Tuesday night. Naveen, the son of a district magistrate in Nanded, Maharashtra, was married to Preeti, who hailed from Latur in Maharashtra, two months ago.
After Preeti’s death, her father, Rajgopal, filed a case of dowry harassment against Naveen with the police on Thursday, in the presence of the tahsildar. The police have now lodged dowry harassment proceedings against Naveen and his parents. While Naveen is still in police custody, his parents, VC Mantri and his wife, were granted bail by the court. A police officer informed DNA, “The law does not permit us to arrest a district magistrate. VC Mantri and his wife are out on bail. But we have arrested Naveen.”
However, Naveen informed the police that Preeti was anguished with him working late hours. Also, he said she had asked him to buy her some valuables which he did not purchase for her. But he also expressed his doubts if his wife could commit suicide over such trivial issues.
