Six Ugandan students rain blows, abuses on Bangalore policemen

Six students from Uganda, who are studying in different colleges here, allegedly assaulted policemen in the wee hours of Saturday at RK Hegdenagar for being stopped at a checkpost.

The students were allegedly drunk at the time of the incident. They have been taken into custody by the Sampigehalli police.

The police said that the students, of which three are girls, have been produced before the court. The accused have been identified as Roni, 22, student of BCA at a private college; Brian, 19, who came to city recently to study; Hussain, 22, studying diploma in civil engineering; Diana, 22; Angela 22; and Mary, 22. 

The men stay in a hostel in Kattigenahalli near Yelahanka. The women are studying BCA and stay in rented houses near Yelahanka.

Police said that the six accused were driving to the city from Bengaluru International Airport in a car. The police, who were carrying out checks at Bellalli Cross, hailed them down, but the students sped away. The police relayed a message to their counterparts informing them about the car.

Assistant sub-inspector Raj Gopal and constable Krishnamurthy, who were on night patrol at RK Hegdenagar, rushed to the main road and barricaded the road. When the students’ car was forced to a halt, the police questioned them. But the students asked the police for their ID cards and the police complied.

Brian got down from the car, snatched Gopal’s ID card and ran away Krishnamurthy gave chase. Meanwhile, Gopal decided to confiscate the car key. Irked by this, Angela hurled abuses at him and also slapped him.

Gopal transmitted the message that he was being assaulted and called for reinforcements.

Night patrol Hoysala vehicles and Cheetah bikes in the area rushed to the scene.

In the meantime, Brian was held. Back at the barricade, the students had allegedly snatched the police lathi and beat up the policemen.

The other policemen who rushed to the scene were also assaulted by the group.

Head constable Vedamurthy, and constable Rajashekhar were also beaten by the gang.

More police officials rushed to the spot to take the students into custody.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the students assaulted the police under the influence of alcohol.

They were returning to Kammanahalli after attending a party. The police also seized alcohol and beer bottles from the car.
